Which therapy is right for me?

You do not need to know which one you need. That is what the first session is for.

The approaches, in plain words

Hypnotherapy

In hypnotherapy you are guided into a relaxed, focused state. It is not sleep, and you can speak and stop at any time. In that state, relaxation and suggestion are used to work with a particular behaviour or pattern. People often ask about it for habits they want to change and for patterns they do not understand in themselves.

Imago

Imago is for couples. It looks at the patterns that sit underneath conflict and distance in a relationship, and it teaches a structured way of talking and listening to each other. Partners usually attend together. The communication tools are meant to be used at home, on your own.

BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy)

BWRT stands for BrainWorking Recursive Therapy. It was developed in 2011 by Terence Watts. It is a structured approach that works with the way the brain reacts to a trigger, such as a memory, a situation or a fear. People ask about it for difficulties such as anxiety, phobias, the after-effects of trauma, grief and self-esteem.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It was developed by Francine Shapiro and is most often used for the after-effects of trauma. In a session you hold a memory in mind while following a side-to-side movement, sound or tap. It follows a set of standard steps, and you do not have to describe everything in detail.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting was developed by David Grand. It is based on the idea that where you look affects how you feel. In a session, I help you find an eye position that seems connected to what you are feeling, and you stay with it quietly, at your own pace. It pays attention to what you notice in your body as well as your thoughts, and it involves less talking than many people expect.

Career & Subject Choice Assessments

A subject or career choice assessment helps a learner make a decision with better information about themselves. It looks at ability, aptitude, interests, personality and the kind of work environment that suits them. It ends with a feedback conversation. An assessment informs the decision. It does not make it.

People often come to me about…

Something that happened, and keeps coming back. An accident, a loss, a frightening event. EMDR, Brainspotting or BWRT are approaches I may suggest. We would decide together at the first session.

Anxiety, panic, or a particular fear. BWRT or EMDR are often what I would consider, and sometimes hypnotherapy. We would decide together at the first session.

A habit or a pattern they want to change. Hypnotherapy is one approach I may suggest. We would decide together at the first session.

Their relationship. Imago is designed for couples, and partners usually attend together. We would decide together at the first session.

Grief. Often what is needed first is time, and someone to talk to. Later we may consider EMDR or BWRT. We would decide together at the first session.

Stress, burnout, or trouble at work. This usually begins with talking through what is happening and what would help. We would decide together at the first session.

A subject or career choice. That is an assessment, not therapy, and a parent books it by phone.
